I Love Basketball!

A few posts ago, I mentioned I was coaching basketball. Well, I finally have some pictures so I could post about it! (Gramma, sorry I never emailed you back in response to your question about this!)
We are members of our local YMCA, and of course they put on all the sports for all the ages. Well this winter, Cammie wanted to put her boys in a sport to keep them active, and they really wanted to play basketball. Since the coaching positions are volunteers, I thought it would be so fun to coach Jer and Briggs! I co-coached with another Dad (his son was on the team) the 1st and 2nd grade team #7. The kids renamed our team The Blue Tornadoes, though! When I first had the thought to coach, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. My dad coached me at this age and all growing up (and did a great job, I might add!), but I had never been on the coaching end. When I told my dad I was going to be coaching, he told me by the end of it I was going to wonder how he did it for so many years! All I can say is that I didn't realize how challenging it could be to coach! But, I absolutely LOVED it and told the boys I'd keep on coaching!
Our little team was adorable! We had about half who had played before and half who had never played, so it was a challenge to try and come up with drills that worked for their levels. Luckily, the other coach had done this a few times and did a pretty good job. You could definitely see some major improvements by the end of the season (which was actually pretty short). All of the sudden it was our last game, and no one was ready for it to end! I can't wait to keep coaching and seeing Jer and Briggs improve and learn to love the game. It's so fun!

Huddle up!

This is how everyone figured out who to guard. For our games, we would play 4 quarters and half way through each quarter we would sub. So each time we stopped playing we would line back up and the kids would point to who they were supposed to guard. It worked out great, once the kids got the hang of it! You should have seen the confusion in the first game! Priceless!
